The Crisis of Student Loans |
|
Growing up in the Bronx, New York, my parents showed me the importance of obtaining an education. They did this by sharing their personal stories and by showing me parts of my neighborhood, and said that with an education you can rise above these unfortunate circumstances. As the youngest of four, I wanted to live up to my parents dreams. When my time came to go to college, my parents were thrilled that I would be the first to earn a college degree, and I did. When I earned my BA, I decided to pursue a Master degree. With my MA degree from Long Island University, I then decided to pursue a PhD. I know, I know quite ambitious, but the degree involved educational technology a resource that I knew if I had, I could use it to educate the children in my community. I also I loved learning, and if learning were a career, it would be mine. I use my education to help others. For example, I helped dropouts enroll in GED courses and literacy courses, I tutor, teach, offer computer workshops for working parents, and fundraise for children in shelters. Yes, my education has helped me do all of this for the members of my Bronx community. My parents are thrilled for my drive and passion for education that I also made it my profession. But, with all this knowledge came a VERY BIG price. The Cost of Education My parents did not have money so I relied on Pell Grants when earning my BA. After my BA, I relied on student loans. I took out loans for my Masters degree and more loans while I was in school for my PhD. But, I decided, not to continue with my PhD, because it became too expensive. The other day, I spoke to a financial aid advisor who guided me with the steps of consolidating my loans. Once that was done, I was told my principal balance is $84,000. What? I told myself, I could not believe it. “You’ll have thirty-years to repay your loans at monthly installments of five hundred dollars,” the financial aid advisor told me. When I heard these words, tears poured down my face. I worked so hard to get where I am today, academically, and now my dreams of every taking my mother and family and moving into a home is lost. I knew I owed money, but not that much money. While thinking and contemplating of what to do, I decided to make this website. In the age of information, I know there are people out there who understand my situation. “I’ll take a shot,” I told a friend. I am not asking for much. All I am asking for is whatever you can contribute, and whatever that is, and I mean whatever, I will greatly appreciate it. I thought that if 80,000 people saw this website and if 80,000 people contributed $1, then I will be able to pay back my loans. To make sure that you understand where you donations are going, each statement I receive on my loan balance, I will post on the web so you can see the difference you are making. Let’s not make earning a degree a financially cumbersome task for those who are not wealthy. The crisis of student loans is real and its affecting many of us, especially those who are poor and who have to rely on student loans to fund their education. So, I ask for your help in repaying my student loans. With your support I can accomplish this task, and bring awareness to others who also share my concern. Anything you can give, anything, is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your support Audrey |
